How TAs can participate in research and course reform (reuses 2024 Spring material).
Computer-systems intro 2023 Autumn case: pressure builds in the later part of the semester; sensed via silent/loud feedback (declining assignment averages, complaints in the group chat); complete grading and a problem-analysis/solution within ten days of the deadline, letting students review; once grading was slow and the solution was half a day late, students asked in the group when it would be posted; the habit of providing solutions each time started that year (previously done only before exams); also discussed keeping two sections in sync, and preparing for later courses (compilers, OS, computer organization); the "tea garden" computer-systems intro used two-person teams for more interesting labs.
Feedback methods: use online-platform stats (git commit history, platform logs, even keyboard data while completing assignments); ask in the lab report for feelings, thoughts, and time spent; learn about assignment opinions during tutoring; end-of-term questionnaire asking "which assignment you liked/disliked and why."
